Quinn's Halloween Adventure

This year Quinn spent the day as Bob the Builder...this is Bob with a serious "cheese" grin. He was happy to take his hammer every where he went and say, "Can we build it? Yes we can!"

We finished the day with a trip through a bouncy house and slide, then chocolate at Grandma and Grandpa's

A year ago, Quinn worked the counter as a barista for Starbucks. I think they talked to him about creating new drinks at headquarters.

Two years ago we were in Newport and Quinn was Superman! And Quinn is still his very own Superman! Fun to see how this little guy keeps chugging along...and so cute!

Pumpkin Passion

The joy of pumpkin has entered my soul yet again and I'd like to share some delicious treats!

Pumpkin Pancakes (from
We made these last night for dinner and they were great! So wonderful and tasty!
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tblspns brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 egg
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons vinegar

In separate bowl, mix together the milk, pumpkin, egg, oil, and vinegar. Combine the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, allspice, cinnamon, ginger and salt, stir into the pumpkin mixture just enough to combine. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Spread the batter out a bit so it isn't so think. Brown on both sides and serve hot with maple syrup and butter. Makes 6 servings.

Pumpkin Streusel Muffins
We made these the other day with Aunt Danae and Ryan ate three the same night...
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1/3 cup oil
1 3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
3 oz. of cream cheese

1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1/4 cup finely chopped nuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine egg, milk, pumpkin, and oil. Stir in remaining ingredients except cream cheese until dry ingredients are moistened. Batter will be lumpy. Fill greased tins about 1/2 full. Divide cream cheese into 12 equal portions. Place cream cheese in center of batter and top with remaining batter to 3/4 full. Combine topping ingredients and mix well. Sprinkle over each muffin. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve hot (or warm up before eating). Makes 12 muffins.

I skipped the last two rules...skipping some things are OK, yes?

My six quirky and boring details are as follows:
  • Before I go to bed at night I have to go through the house and put everything back where it belongs so we start the next morning fresh and new messes can be made.
  • I have a grocery list printed out by aisle so I don't have to track back and forth across the store.
  • I like Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi.
  • My favorite t-shirt is one I've had since 1990...I was a freshman in high school. I never wear it out of the house.
  • Once when Ryan and I were dating we drove 75 miles in one night...all in little Newberg.
  • My favorite cereal in Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds.

Who's there?

We are still alive and well though emerging from a few weeks of busy, busy work, an oral surgery for me, a hall bathroom remodel (pictures to come soon!), some issues with Quinn's tube...basically when life's events converge at one time. Some we chose and some chose us!

Is it October?

This past month has flown by very, very quickly and been very, very full. I'm eager to have some more time to share some pictures and tell some stories. In the meantime, I thought I'd list some things going on in the Dougherty household to just say we are still here!

  • I'm choosing to embrace fall now that October is here. I can actually get out the fall decorations and Quinn is eager to go to a pumpkin patch. In honor of my decision to let go of the summer I drank a hot vanilla latte.
  • We had four days of tree trimming done...arborvitaes sheared nine feet shorter, large trees trimmed, small trees trimmed. The yard got a hair cut.
  • Ryan spent a week in Seattle for a national admissions conference.
  • Quinn took his first airplane ride! We went to visit Grandma Laurene in the Oakland area and it was a quick but special trip.
  • Tonight is my last first year seminar class, a class I've been co-teaching with a friend. It has been enjoyable.
  • We've been navigating the past week and a half at George Fox with some difficult times on campus in the wake of a serious incident last week. Political issues, racial issues, student decisions, and what it means to be a follower of Christ. It is hard to put into words this unexpected and difficult time--if you read the link above you'll see that the situation involved the program I work with on campus and the scenario obviously has a major impact too on Ryan's work through admissions and what others learn about George Fox. I'll share more about this in the future.
  • At work I had a really great experience putting together a program called a Sophomore Evening of Black and White. A classy reception for sophomores and it turned out so well. I'm still exploring the best way to work well, organizing myself and my time.
  • Quinn got to enjoy two fun birthdays--one at the zoo and one cooking and being a chef!
  • Quinn. That kid is so fun and funny. How he sees the world, expresses himself, and shows his humor and compassion. I kid you not, the kid has a talent for voices like his dad. And a tender heart. What a sweet little man. He has just entered into the world of "Why"?...about everything.
